Today marks an important transition for our council as Camp Black Hawk, located in Langlade County, officially changes ownership.
Camp Black Hawk is a longtime Girl Scout camp and holds a special place in the hearts of many Girl Scout alums, making this decision all the more difficult. The property has not been in operation for more than six years. During that time, our council has carefully assessed how best to meet the evolving needs of Girl Scouts while ensuring our resources are used responsibly. Earlier this spring, Badgerland’s Board of Directors approved the sale, and today, the $1.7 million transaction is complete.
The property has been purchased by Leigh and Jeff Thorne, whose family has longstanding ties to the land. Generations ago, Jeff’s grandparents sold the property to the Girl Scouts, and now it returns to the family’s stewardship. The Thornes have expressed their deep respect for the history of Camp Black Hawk and their intention to honor its legacy, protect its natural beauty, and ensure its future care. It is a full-circle moment that helps honor the history of the camp, as Badgerland moves forward.
As we turn our focus to the future, Badgerland’s commitment to outdoor experiences remains stronger than ever. Across the 2024-25 fiscal years, we are investing more than $1 million in capital improvements and maintenance across all Badgerland properties, from outdoor spaces to Leadership Centers, including a new member-focused location in Onalaska. At Camp Ehawee and Camp Brandenburg, significant upgrades have been made including a new target sports pavilion, a renovated pool, and refreshed trails at Ehawee. At Brandenburg, indoor program spaces have been transformed, lakefront areas enhanced, and a long-needed upgrade to the kitchen has improved both safety and functionality. These improvements are just the beginning. Together, we will continue to expand meaningful outdoor opportunities for Girl Scouts to explore, grow, and lead in nature.
Camp Black Hawk holds deep meaning and memories for so many in our Badgerland Girl Scouting community and it’s imperative we come together to honor its legacy. While a closing ceremony at the site is not possible due to safety concerns, we are planning meaningful ways to celebrate its special history at Badgerland. We will work with Camp Black Hawk alumni to create a dedicated memories area at the Madison Leadership Center featuring photographs and memorabilia. Additionally, we will host a tribute event later this year and will share details as plans come together.
We deeply appreciate how hard it has been to reach this point of letting go of a treasured Girl Scout asset. As we move forward, may we all recommit to caring for and preserving the spaces that continue to shape Girl Scouts for generations to come.
Thank you for your continued support of Badgerland Girl Scouts. Together, we honor the past, embrace the present, and build a strong future rooted in the power of outdoor adventure and the values that guide Girl Scouts.
Warmly,
Lisa A. Smith
